Open Letter to the Minister

Dear Minister for Health and Aged Care, We, the undersigned Australians, call on the Federal Government to formally recognise and regulate health savings accounts as a legitimate alternative to private health insurance extras cover. Every year on April 1st, private health funds raise their premiums — often above the rate of inflation — while delivering diminishing value to extras cover members. In 2026 alone, major funds raised premiums by between 4.20% and 5.47%, as approved by the Department of Health. Australians deserve the right to self-manage their health spending through a regulated, transparent savings vehicle — one where unspent funds roll over, balances earn interest, and there are no waiting periods, no rate hikes, and no commissions paid to comparison sites. We ask the Government to: 1. Formally recognise health savings accounts as a regulated alternative to extras cover 2. Establish a licensing framework under ASIC for health savings account providers 3. Allow tax-advantaged contributions to health savings accounts, similar to superannuation 4. Require private health funds to offer a "hospital only" product at a fair price This is not a radical idea. Health savings accounts are used successfully in Singapore, the United States, and South Africa. It is time Australia gave consumers a real choice. Signed, [Petition Signatories] #FixHealthExtras

Why this matters

📈

Premiums rise every year

Since 2010, health fund premiums have risen by over 80%. Wages haven't kept up. Australians are paying more for less.

💸

$787 wasted every year

The average Australian pays more in extras premiums than they ever claim. That money disappears forever. A savings account lets you keep it.

Waiting periods trap you

Switch funds and you restart waiting periods — up to 12 months for major dental. Comparison sites profit. You don't.

🏛️

It works overseas

Singapore, the US, and South Africa all have regulated health savings accounts. It's proven. It works. Australia is behind.

Every week you wait costs you $48
Your health fund kept $12,423 over 5 years. Time to take it back.
